Cannabanoids
THC and CBD are the best-known of the cannabinoids, although there are many more in the cannabis plant. Many of the cannabinoids have no known effect on humans, but are thought to be important in the “entourage effect” of using the whole plant to have the best experience.
THC is the psychoactive molecule in the cannabis plant. THC is responsible for the high that we experience.
CBD does not create a “high” in humans. It is thought to be good for relaxation when ingested and muscle relaxation when used in a single area as a cream or ointment. It is the molecule that is thought to give relief from seizures, depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
Terpenes
Terpenes are the compounds that give cannabis its distinctive aroma, similar to those found in sage, thyme, citrus, and evergreens. They’re not just about scent; terpenes are believed to influence the effects of various cannabis strains. Although research is still underway, it’s thought that the terpene profile can affect the overall experience of each strain.
Ways to Take
Smoking or vaping pulls the molecules of THC and CBD, along with other compounds, into the lungs where it enters the bloodstream immediately. The effects of smoking or vaping your cannabis can usually be felt within 15 minutes and can be very strong. Studies have shown that inhaling cannabis products has a bioavailability of about 30%, while ingesting them through edibles, tinctures, or capsules has a bioavailability of 5-10%. Therefore, smoking puts more THC and other cannabinoids into your bloodstream and is a more predictable high as it is not affected by what you have eaten or how fast it is ingested.
Swallowing an edible, a capsule, or even a tincture, puts that compound in your stomach. How the cannabinoids like THC get to your bloodstream is then based on what you have eaten, the speed of digestion, and liver absorption. Cannabis loves fat and oils, so a heavy meal may help you feel effects faster, unlike alcohol, which is more potent on an empty stomach. All of that said, how much fun is it to have some chocolate and a while later still be blissed out?
Topical applications do not have psychoactive effects, meaning none of the cannabinoids reach the brain and therefore you will not have a “high” or relief from seizures, depression, or other neurological ailments with topicals. Topicals are thought to help with arthritis, muscle pain, joint pain, and skin health.
